Inter cruise to comfortable victory

Ten-man PSV Eindhoven crashed out of the UEFA Champions League as they slumped to a 1-0 defeat to Internazionale at the Philips Stadion. Ahead of kick-off the Dutch club were aware that they needed to defeat Inter and hope that their Group G rivals Fenerbahce slipped up at home to CSKA Moscow in order to progress. However, midfielder Edison Mendez was given a straight red card in the first half before Julio Cruz netted Inter's winner to condemn PSV to the Uefa Cup. PSV began in a style which indicated they were well aware of the task which stood in front of them and Jason Culina was unfortunate to see a long-range effort drift narrowly wide.

Counter attack

Mike Zonneveld also looked to test Julio Cesar early on as he blasted a left footed free-kick towards the Inter goalkeeper. However, on 20 minutes Inter began to create chances of their own and Santiago Solari and David Suazo should have done better when well placed. On 28 minutes PSV were to be dealt their major blow as they were caught inexcusably short at the back while attacking to leave German referee Markus Merk little choice but to dismiss Mendez. Inter quickly countered and the PSV midfielder found himself last man with Suazo and he was forced into a lunging challenge resulting in his early marching orders as he felled the Honduran forward who was through on goal.
Comfortable
The Italian champions should then have had the lead after the interval as Suazo used his pace to break free and feed Cruz, but the Inter forward horribly blazed over the bar. Inter coach Roberto Mancini, though, saw his side grab their deserved goal when the excellent Suazo skilfully left Carlos Salcido and Timmy Simons flat footed on 62 minutes to give Cruz the simple task of atoning for his earlier miss from close range. PSV could have struck back immediately when Danko Lazovic found himself in acres of space in the penalty area, but he showed a lack of concentration to match the Inter defence as he swung his volley well wide. With just over ten minutes remaining Solari could have made Inter's win more comprehensive when he span and volleyed against the upright, but one goal proved to be enough.
