Eindhoven dominate at the Philips Stadion

PSV Eindhoven cruised into the last 16 of the Europa League after a 4-1 win over Turkish side Trabzonspor gave them a 6-2 aggregate success. The Dutch giants took a 2-1 lead into the second leg and they made light work of the tie with first-half goals from Dries Mertens, Tim Matavz and Kevin Strootman setting up the win. Burak Yilmaz reduced the deficit two minutes before the interval but any hopes the Turkish side had of mounting a comeback disappeared on the stroke of half-time when their goalkeeper Tolga Zengin was sent off. Matavz completed the rout with his second goal of the night in the second half.

Sight

Olcan Adin had an early sight of goal for the visitors but his shot from the edge of the box was comfortably saved by PSV keeper Andreas Isaksson. Zengin was called into action to keep out efforts from Ola Toivonen and Jetro Willems, but the Trabzonspor keeper was helpless to prevent his side going behind in the 14th minute. Ondrej Celustka's foul on Mertens prompted the referee to point to the spot, and the Belgium winger picked himself up to despatch the penalty into the bottom-left corner. Matavz stretched PSV's lead just after the half-hour mark when he directed his header low into the net from Mertens' cross. Strootman made it 3-0 on the night and 5-1 overall with a neat left-footed finish into the bottom-left corner seven minutes before half-time, following good work on the right by Zakaria Labyad. Matavz sent another header wide soon after as Fred Rutten's side continued on the offensive. But it was the visitors who were next on the score sheet, Yilmaz following up to score from close range after Isaksson had parried Olcan Adin's blast.

Aspirations

However, if Trabzonspor harboured unlikely aspirations of getting back into the tie, they soon evaporated when Zengin was shown a red card just before half time for handling the ball outside his penalty area. Paulo Henrique was sacrificed to make way for reserve goalkeeper Onur Kivrak, and it did not take long in the second half before he was picking the ball out of his net. Kivrak twice saved well to deny Georgino Wijnaldum, and looked on as Labyad curled a shot just wide, but within eight minutes of the restart Matavz drilled PSV's fourth goal of the night into the bottom-left corner. The remainder of the match petered out without significant incident, ensuring PSV secured a last-16 meeting with Valencia.
