Final decided on penalties after 1-1 draw

Lazio salvaged something from a disappointing season by beating Sampdoria on penalties in the Coppa Italia final. The match finished 1-1 after an early goal from Lazio's Argentine forward Mauro Zarate was cancelled out by Giampaolo Pazzini before half-time. There were no further before the end of extra time and it was Lazio who held their nerve to prevail 6-5 in the shoot-out. Former Birmingham loanee Zarate broke the deadlock in style after just four minutes, cutting in past Hugo Campagnaro to curl a right-footed shot into the far corner from the edge of the area. Both sides had chances in an entertaining opening before Pazzini equalised with a looping header on 31 minutes following good work by Antonio Cassano and Marius Stankevicius. Samp came closest to a winner in normal time as Stephan Lichtsteiner cleared Cassano's shot off the line. Both sides then looked to push forward in extra time but there was no change to the scoreline and Lazio ultimately triumphed on sudden death penalties. Goalkeeper Fernando Muslera was the hero as he saved Campagnaro's spot-kick, allowing Ousmane Dabo to score the winner.
