Europa League contenders Hamburg could only manage a 1-1 draw at Freiburg in their Bundesliga curtain-raiser.
Tommy Bechmann snatched a point for the home side with his 65th minute effort after Jonathan Pitroipa had given Hamburg an early lead.
Hamburg are now under the management of Bruno Labbadia after Martin Jol moved to Ajax earlier in the summer.
Labbadia will hope to mount a serious push on qualifying for the UEFA Champions League this season after the club finished fifth in the Bundesliga last term.
