Schalke maintained their UEFA Champions League aspirations with a 2-0 home win over Cologne on Sunday.
Joel Matip and Jefferson Farfan scored in each half to secure the three points and reinforce Felix Magath's side's hold on third place in the table.
Schalke, as in many previous home matches, had the upper hand in a largely dour display and took their chances while giving very little away at the back.
Matip, an 18-year-old defensive midfielder, headed in a free-kick taken by Lukas Schmitz in first-half stoppage time for his second Bundesliga goal.
Jefferson then secured the victory in the 81st minute, connecting with a pass from Kevin Kuranyi to score from close range.
