Stuttgart put to the sword by Magath's men

Schalke provisionally took charge of the Bundesliga on Friday with a 2-1 victory over Stuttgart. They moved onto 54 points for the season, edging them one in front of Bayern Munich. Schalke coach Felix Magath has been quick to play down his side's title credentials but, having taken Wolfsburg to the top of the table last term, few are listening. After a quiet first half, in which Kevin Kuranyi spurned the best of the openings, Brazilian Edu put the hosts ahead immediately after the interval when he pounced on a defensive blunder from Serdar Tasci to rifle home from close range.

Pressure

Tasci made amends, though, four minutes later when he headed home a Zdrayko Kuzmanovic cross to restore parity. Schalke, who have won their last eight games on home soil, kept up the pressure and their effort was rewarded on 56 minutes when Kuranyi grabbed his 14th league goal of the season. The Germany international, who is hoping to be awarded a World Cup call-up this summer, now joins Bayer Leverkusen's Stefan Kiessling at the top of the Bundesliga scoring charts. Edu could have bagged his second of the night with eight minutes remaining, with the Stuttgart defence is disarray, but his powerful drive flew narrowly wide.
