Goalless at Sevilla

Sevilla's reliance on the goals of Alvara Negredo cost them on Sunday night as they made all the running but were held to a frustrating goalless draw at home to Levante. The former Real Madrid forward had scored half of the Rojiblancos 12 league goals prior to Sunday night, and with him unable to fire they had to settle for a point. Negredo could not be blamed entirely - he was part of a forward line which failed to break down Juan Ignacio Martinez's side - but it will be of concern that if he does not score, Sevilla do not look as great a threat. Their effort could not be faulted tonight, but their execution left a lot to be desired. Jesus Navas, one of the division's stand-out players this season, did his best to get them going early on, crossing for Negredo who was denied by Gustavo Munua, before the winger fired wide himself. Negredo had a close-range strike blocked by Antonio Luna, before lashing over from the edge of the box. Levante were offering nothing but got to the break level, a trend which continued after the interval as Munua easily dealt with Emir Spahic's strike. Navas then returned to the heart of the action, driving wide, with Gary Medel doing the same thing. Papa Baba Diawara forced Munua into his first serious action of the night with a stinging effort that was tipped away, but the same player had his head in his hands six minutes from the end when he produced a horror miss. Munua was beaten when Jose Campana's deflected shot looped onto the post and, when the ball fell into the six-yard box, all Diawara had to do was keep it down and on target. He failed on both accounts. It seemed as though Sevilla's best chance had gone, something which proved correct as Medel ended the night with a couple of tame strikes.
