Southend let lead slip to lose out at home

Oldham stunned Southend by scoring twice in four minutes late on to emerge with a 2-1 win. The fightback was led by Chris Taylor who, in the 67th minute, produced a superb header to equalise following a right-wing corner from Andy Liddell. Then, in the 71st minute, Lee Hughes got what proved to be the winner when he drilled in a low shot from a narrow angle after the home defence had failed to clear a Taylor free-kick. Southend had taken the lead in the 52nd minute when James Walker followed in from close range after a cross from Simon Francis. It was no more than Southend deserved at that stage because they had been the dominant force in the opening half and missed several chances, not least when Walker headed over the bar from five yards out when it seemed easier to score. Jean-Francois Christophe also saw a 20-yard effort rebound off the Oldham woodwork but the end, however, Oldham proved to have the greater determination and could have easily have added further goals in the last 10 minutes.
