Barry Corr's early goal secured Southend a hard-fought 1-0 win against Plymouth at Roots Hall.

The Irish striker, who came close to joining Burton during the summer, reacted sharply in the 15th minute as he slotted home from close range after Marc Laird's low shot had been saved by Pilgrims goalkeeper Luke McCormick. Southend, whose victory ended a run of 10 home games without a win, came close to doubling their lead in the second half when Freddy Eastwood had a deflected 25-yard free-kick tipped wide of the post by McCormick. The Argyle goalkeeper then did well to block a low shot from Laird with his legs before Anthony Straker slashed a 12-yard shot wide of the post when he should have done better. Plymouth rarely threatened going forward, but striker Rueben Reid wasted their best to chance, firing a close-range shot straight at Southend goalkeeper Daniel Bentley, who then smothered a long-range shot from Conor Hourihane.
