Ribery, Toni and Klose on target in rout

Bayern Munich hammered Sporting 5-0 in Portugal to take a massive step towards the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. Franck Ribery scored with a superb piece of individual skill and then from the penalty spot, with Miroslav Klose netting in between before Luca Toni hit a late brace. The scoreline seems even more remarkable as Sporting - who had qualified from the group stage for the first time this season - had dominated play before Ribery opened the scoring in the 41st minute. Anderson Polga had the best chance for the home side in the 12th minute when a corner found him unmarked in the box but his effort was cleared off the line by Philipp Lahm. Shortly afterwards Ribery shot well wide from outside the area, while at the other end Liedson blasted over from the edge of the box. Toni then won a corner for Bayern and headed the resulting kick high and wide at the near post, before Liedson won a Sporting corner with a long range effort but the home side could not take advantage.

      Late challenge

Marco van Bommel was booked for a late challenge on Joao Moutinho in the 31st minute and Lucio went down after over-stretching for a cross from Abel but was okay to carry on. An Abel cross from the right was then blocked by Martin Demichelis and the ball fell to Moutinho but he put his shot well wide, while Liedson headed wide soon afterwards. But Ribery put the visitors ahead against the run of play when latching onto a sloppy pass by Derlei near the halfway line. He powered between defenders Tonel and Polga before clinically shooting past keeper Tiago. Tonel was then booked for a challenge on Ribery before half-time, while after the interval, Ribery sent a cross from the left towards Toni but it was just too far in front of the big targetman at the far post. Derlei then had an overhead kick go wide for the home side, while Abel shot wide soon afterwards from close range.
      Doubled advantage
But Klose doubled Bayern's advantage on 57 minutes after Massimo Oddo's cross from the right was flicked on by Toni in the middle and the German striker scored off his thigh at the far post. Soon afterwards, Sporting coach Paulo Bento made a double substitution to try and get his side back in the game, bringing on Simon Vukcevic and Bruno Pereirinha for Marat Izmailov and Abel. But Bayern won a penalty just a minute later when Lahm was brought down by a reckless Fabio Rochemback challenge for a clear spot-kick. Ribery made no mistake with the resulting kick, scoring into the bottom corner on 63 minutes. Three minutes later Klose had a free header from 10 yards but put his effort well over, as did Liedson at the other end. Pereirinha was booked for a high challenge on Lahm before Toni then netted a fourth six minutes before the end, heading home a Ribery cross from the left at the far post The Italian then scored his second in the 90th minute to complete the rout, with the German side now already virtually through when this last-16 tie resumes in Munich on 10th March.
