St Johnstone 2-1 Dundee: Saints up to fourth with win
Sunday 23 October 2016 16:11, UK
St Johnstone moved up to fourth in the Scottish Premiership after a pair of second-half goals sealed a 2-1 victory over bottom club Dundee at McDiarmid Park.
Skipper Steven Anderson gave the Saints a 62nd-minute lead and Danny Swanson then tucked away a penalty with 15 minutes remaining to make it 2-0.
But the hosts conceded a spot-kick themselves with just two minutes left and Rory Loy converted, meaning St Johnstone had to see out a nervy last few minutes.
The visitors were looking to avoid a fifth successive league defeat and should have taken the lead after 13 minutes but Yordi Teijsse shot straight at goalkeeper Zander Clark after great build-up play from Paul McGowan.
Clark also pulled off a decent save to deny Tom Hateley while Saints fans appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty when Steven MacLean appeared to be caught by Kevin Holt.
Swanson then tried his luck with a curling effort but Dundee keeper Scott Bain made a comfortable stop.
The match livened up after the break and Swanson produced a powerful effort, but Bain was on hand to save once again.
And the hosts then took the lead when Liam Craig sent over a deep free-kick from the right and Anderson was left unmarked at the back post to volley into the net from close range.
Saints looked set to cruise to victory when Kevin Gomis then went through the back of MacLean as he tried to get on the end of a right-wing cross and ref Andrew Dallas pointed to the spot.
Bain guessed the right way but Swanson beat him with a well-placed spot-kick. Swanson then created another opportunity with a delightful chipped pass to substitute Michael Coulson, who almost made a dramatic entry, only to hit the crossbar with his header.
However, Dundee were then handed a lifeline out of nowhere when Anderson's careless push on Teijsse allowed Loy to send Clark the wrong way from the spot.
Dundee piled on the pressure in the closing stages with a series of balls into the area but the home defence held out through three minutes of stoppage-time, allowing Saints to leapfrog Rangers into fourth and go level on points with third-placed Hearts.
