Scotland rescues Swans

Swansea moved five points clear at the top of League One after grinding out a 2-2 draw with Bristol Rovers.

Pirates push league leaders all the way

Swansea moved five points clear at the top of League One, but were forced to recover from two down to grab a point against a dogged Bristol Rovers. First-half efforts from Ricky Lambert and Craig Disley were cancelled out by a brace from the Swans' goal machine Jason Scotland, and Roberto Martinez's side could even have nicked all three points had they not wasted a hatful of chances. The league leaders edged the opening exchanges and Ferry Bodde tested Steve Phillips with a long range effort inside the first ten minutes. However, Rovers quickly established a foot hold in the game and it was they who took the lead on 14 minutes through Lambert's ninth league goal of the season. The Swansea defence struggled to clear their lines and the Pirates' top scorer was able to brush aside a challenge from Alan Tate before firing a left foot strike past a helpless Dorus De Vries and into the bottom corner. Rather than sit back on their lead, Paul Trollope's side continued to take the game to the hosts and should have grabbed a second just minutes later when Steve Elliott and Danny Coles both went close with headers from two quick corners. They were not to be denied for long though and doubled their advantage on 36 minutes when Disley beat the offside trap before calmly slotting past on the onrushing De Vries. Clearly rattled by their first-half display, Swansea began to move through the gears after the break and were virtually camped in Rovers' half for long periods of the game. It took them just five minutes to drag themselves back into the game, and it came as no surprise that Scotland was the man to provide the breakthrough. Steve Phillips could only parry a snap shot from Leon Britton and the Trinidad and Tobago international made no mistake as he fired home from an acute angle. With Disley, Budde and Dennis Lawrence then all going close for the Swans it appeared only a matter of time before Roberto Martinez's side were back on level terms. Sure enough, with just six minutes remaining Scotland grabbed his 28th of the season as he rattled in an unstoppable curling effort from the edge of the box. There was still time for Darryl Duffy to see a free header cleared off the line by Stuart Campbell, but the Swans were unable to complete a remarkable turnaround and were eventually forced to settle for a point.
