Swindon began the new League One season at home in emphatic style with a 3-1 win over Tranmere.

Strike duo inspire Robins

Swindon strikers Simon Cox and Billy Paynter combined to comfortably see off Tranmere 3-1 as the Robins began the new League One season at home in emphatic style. Paynter and Cox were a constant thorn in the side of the Tranmere defence, who were fortunate to emerge from the game with conceding only three goals. Paynter headed the first on five minutes and from that moment on it was one-way traffic. Jon-Paul McGovern delicately chipped a cross towards the far post and Paynter rose above his marker to direct a powerful header over the line. Swindon dominated, passing their way around the flat-footed Tranmere midfield, and the second goal after 37 minutes had an air of inevitability about it. Goalkeeper Peter Brezovan's long punt upfield was headed on by Paynter and Cox was the beneficiary, finishing from 12 yards. The hosts then marched into an unassailable lead five minutes into the second half when Cox turned provider, crossing low for McGovern to slam home. Tranmere undeservedly nicked a consolation five minutes from the end through the determination of Edrissa Sonko, who crossed at the second attempt for debutant Bas Savage to stab home from close range.
