Seattle Sounders won the MLS Cup for the first time in their history after beating Toronto FC 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out.

Roman Torres scored the winning spot-kick for the Sounders, after 120 minutes of goalless action, to complete a stunning second half of the season where they lost just four of 21 games.

Torres coolly slotted home in sudden death after Justin Morrow's effort had crashed into the crossbar and Toronto will be left contemplating the one that got away.

The Canadians, who had a better record over the course of the MLS season to earn home advantage, were by far the better team over the 120 minutes, creating several chances, while Sounders won without having a shot on target.

Jozy Altidore had the best of Toronto's chances, bundling a shot wide inside the opening five minutes before having a header saved by goalkeeper Stefan Frei soon after.

But it was a stunning save from Frei in extra-time that proved so crucial, the keeper somehow clawing away Altidore's looping header when it looked certain to drop into the top corner.

That stop allowed the Sounders to get to penalties and after Michael Bradley and Alvaro Fernandez each missed in the first five kicks, it was left to Torres to write himself into Sounders history.
