Tottenham v Newcastle preview: Harry Kane set to return as Spurs look to continue unbeaten run
Sunday 13 December 2015 16:33, UK
Harry Kane is set for a return to the Tottenham starting line-up when Newcastle visit White Hart Lane on Super Sunday.
Mauricio Pochettino's side thumped Monaco 4-1 in the Europa League on Thursday to seal top spot in Group J and confirm their place in the seeded pot for Monday's round of 32 draw.
In the Premier League, Spurs, who are three points off fourth spot, are unbeaten since the opening day of the season but will be hoping to get back to winning ways after back-to-back draws against Chelsea and West Brom.
Newcastle got back on track last weekend with a 2-0 victory over Liverpool at St James' Park.
However, Steve McClaren's side will now be looking to improve an away record which has seen them win just once in seven matches on the road this season.
Team news
Eric Dier is available after he was taken off in the first half against Monaco but only as a precaution, while Kane is set to return to action after sitting out the match on Thursday.
Mousa Dembele has been ruled out as he continues to struggle to overcome a stomach bug. Ryan Mason and Alex Pritchard are both out with ankle injuries, as well as Clinton Njie following his knee injury against Monaco.
Meanwhile, McClaren will select from the same squad as he did for last weekend's victory over Jurgen Klopp's side.
The Newcastle boss has no new injury problems and has Jamaal Lascelles (hamstring) back in training. The defender is expected to be joined by midfielders Cheick Tiote (groin) and Rolando Aarons (foot) within days.
However, McClaren is still without goalkeeper Tim Krul (knee ligaments), defenders Steven Taylor, Mike Williamson (both hamstring) and Massadio Haidara (knee cartilage), midfielder Gabriel Obertan (hamstring) and striker Emmanuel Riviere (knee).
Opta stats
None of the last 18 Premier League games between these two sides at White Hart Lane has ended as a draw.
Tottenham have hit the target with 59% of their shots at goal, the highest percentage in the league this season.
Spurs have committed the most fouls in the league this season (208) and picked up the most yellow cards (35).
Pochettino's side are unbeaten in 14 league games (W6 D8) - their best run in the top-flight since March 1985.
Georginio Wijnaldum has now been involved in 56% of Newcastle's Premier League goals this season (9/16).
Paul Merson's prediction
It just shows how ruthless this league can be sometimes. Newcastle beat Liverpool and then have to go to White Hart Lane, against a Spurs side who have lost just once.
But I think Spurs are getting into that mould at the moment, maybe a tad tired, and they look to be going out with the attitude of making sure they don't lose the game before they go out to win the game.
Newcastle's result was phenomenal, but I do expect Spurs to win this, they are a good side with in-form players. They need to break down the brick wall here after two draws.
