Lionel Messi missed a penalty as Barcelona were held to a 1-1 draw by Valencia in the first leg of their Copa Del Rey semi-final.

Lionel Messi missed a second half penalty as Barcelona were held to a 1-1 draw by Valencia in the first leg of their Copa Del Rey semi-final. Barcelona survived a scare early on when goalkeeper Jose Pinto handled the ball outside the box, but the Barca custodian got away with a yellow card instead of a red card. Valencia broke the deadlock after 27 minutes when Jeremy Mathieu burst down the left and crossed for Jonas to fire home from inside the box. Barcelona drew level ten minutes before the break when Carles Puyol headed home Cesc Fabregas's corner at the far post. The visitors wasted a great chance to go in front on 55 mintes when they won a penalty after Miguel fouled Thiago inside the box. Messi took responsibiity from the spot, but he saw his effort superbly saved by Valencia keeper Diego Alves. Barca continued to push forward for a winner and Gerard Pique missed a great oppportunity to score when he headed over from the close-range with the goal at his mercy.
