Ryan Jarvis scored a wonder-goal and missed a penalty as Walsall squeezed past battling Shrewsbury 2-1 in the JPT.
The striker gave the Saddlers a 17th-minute lead with a tremendous strike from 35 yards, and in the 35th minute Richard Taundry volleyed a second when a corner from Kevan Hurst was partially cleared to him. League Two Shrewsbury played some terrific football, though, and defender Shane Cansdell-Sherriff twice went close with headers following corners. Shrewsbury were back in it three minutes into the second half, Walsall defender Andy Butler heading past his own keeper trying to clear a cross from Joe Jacobson. After severe Shrewsbury pressure Walsall had a chance to wrap it up when Alex Nicholls was brought down by Jermaine Grandison in the 70th minute but Jarvis, with a chance to score his fourth of the season, smashed the spot-kick against the bar. Shrewsbury sub Mark Wright blew a chance to equalise against his old side late on.
