Watford v Burton preview: Heurelho Gomes ruled out for Hornets
Saturday 7 January 2017 15:26, UK
Heurelho Gomes has been ruled out of Watford's FA Cup third-round tie with Burton on Saturday with the flu, and will be replaced in goal by Costel Pantilimon.
The Hornets have accrued just one point from their last five Premier League games, but boss Walter Mazzarri has told his players that he takes the FA Cup seriously and will be picking a strong team.
Burton, meanwhile, enter the FA Cup at this stage for the first time in their history and boss Nigel Clough is keen to remember how far the club have come.
"As a non-league club it was our aim just to get to the third round proper and get a League One or Two club so it's lovely to go in at the third round," he told Burton's official website. "The draw hasn't been particularly kind to us with a Premier League side away but we will do our best."
Team news
Other than Gomes, Watford have no fresh injury concerns ahead of Burton's visit to Vicarage Road.
Ben Watson has returned from compassionate leave and he'll be on the bench on Saturday, while Mazzarri has confirmed that Odion Ighalo is set to be in the team.
Luke Murphy could make his debut for Burton after signing on loan from Leeds until the end of the season. Fellow new signings Luke Varney and Marvin Sordell could also be in line to feature.
Opta stats
This will be the first competitive encounter between these two sides.
The Hornets have progressed from 10 of their last 11 FA Cup ties against lower division sides, losing 0-1 against Brighton at Vicarage Road in 2011.
Burton progressed past the third round of the FA Cup for their first and only time in 2011 when they beat Middlesbrough 2-1 thanks to a late Shaun Harrad brace.
Watford have reached the fourth round in four of the last six FA Cup campaigns, losing out to Chelsea in 2015 and Man City in 2013.
Troy Deeney has been directly involved in each of Watford's last three goals in the FA Cup (one goal, two assists).
