Latics host Lilywhites in Lancashire derby

Wigan and Preston will be looking to put their disappointing league campaigns behind them when they go head-to-head in Carling Cup action. The Latics have just one win to their name from their first five Premier League outings while Preston are in the Championship relegation zone after picking up just three points from a possible 21. Wigan boss Roberto Martinez is planning to make changes to his side for Wednesday night's clash by giving some of his fringe players a much-needed run out. Victor Moses could feature after making a brief return from an ankle injury as a substitute in Sunday's Premier League loss to Manchester City. Other fringe players such as James McArthur and Steven Caldwell could be given a chance in the derby clash at the DW Stadium. Martinez has no new fitness concerns but Gary Caldwell (hip) remains on the sidelines and on-loan Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley (knee) is both injured and ineligible.
Preston news
Preston boss Darren Ferguson is unable to hand a first start to Canadian striker Iain Hume for North End's short trip to the DW Stadium. The on-loan Barnsley striker came off the bench to make his debut in Saturday's 1-0 defeat at the hands of Norwich but is ineligible as he played in an earlier round for his parent club. Midfielder Keith Treacy and Paul Coutts are expected to miss out with groin injuries and Ferguson will also assess the fitness of defender Callum Davidson. He was a late withdrawal at the weekend and on-loan Manchester United duo Matt James and Josh King are also expected to remain sidelined with ankle injuries.
