John Akinde's first-half strike was the difference as Wycombe claimed a vital 1-0 win over Gillingham.

Jackson misses penalty for Gills

John Akinde's first-half strike was the difference as Wycombe claimed a vital three points to give their automatic promotion hopes a huge boost by beating Gillingham 1-0. But the Gills wasted a golden chance to get a point as Simeon Jackson blasted a second-half penalty well over the top. Wanderers were inches away from taking the lead after just two minutes when Chris Zebroski saw his low drive smash into the post after he was found by Matt Bloomfield's cross from the left. The defences were on top for much of the half and the closest the Gills came to an opener was when Jackson hit a powerful volley over the crossbar when well placed. Moments later the breakthrough came when Akinde slid the ball smartly past an onrushing Simon Royce for his fifth Wycombe strike after being put through by a superb pass from Lee Sawyer. Five minutes after the break the Gills were handed their chance to draw level when Chairboys skipper David McCracken felled Jackson but the striker sent the resulting spot-kick over.
