Gills downed in dying embers by stunning strike

James Walker scored a stunning late effort to give Yeovil a 2-1 win over fellow League One strugglers Gillingham at Huish Park. The lively wide man delighted the home crowd in the 88th minute when he turned his man cleverly before exchanging passes with Justin Cochrane and firing in a crisp left foot drive beyond Simon Royce. The first period was overshadowed by a serious-looking head injury sustained to Efe Sodje; with the Nigerian international out cold in an incident which resulted in a 13-minute delay. Sodje, who went off with just over a quarter of an hour gone, had earlier replaced Ian Cox - who had hobbled off injured. Yeovil captain Terry Skiverton had the first opportunity of note when his header was cleared off the line, before Anthony Barry fired a free-kick a yard or so wide.

      Rolls Royce

Royce then rescued Gillingham with a smart save to deny the lively Walker, before Lloyd Owusu was guilty of a shocking miss. Walker's clever run down the left made space and from his cross Paul Warne struck the bar as the ball fell perfectly for Owusu - who from no more than a yard out, crashed it back against from where it came. Gillingham's Chris Dickson tested Steve Mildenhall, before after the interval he missed a free header he should have dispatched and then fired just over the top with a 30-yard thumper. Royce then rolled back the years as he denied what looked to be a certain goal from Owusu, as he prevented his header from crossing the line with a stunning stop. In-form Owusu was not be denied though, for in the 66th minute he scored the game's opening goal in prodding in Walker's whipped in ball from the right. With Yeovil on top Darren Way and Walker both went close, before in the 75th minute Dickson scored his eighth goal in as many games. Yeovil's defending was dreadful in failing to deal with a corner, as Terrell Forbes inadvertently hammered the ball into his goalkeeper, with Mildenhall powerless to prevent Dickson from netting the rebound from close range. The final say was left to the game's best performer as Walker scored a fine late winner.
