Steven Gerrard has 'underachieved' at Liverpool and should have joined Chelsea, Jeremy Cross told the Sunday Supplement.

Gerrard has just three matches remaining at Liverpool – starting with Chelsea on Super Sunday – before beginning a new chapter in Major League Soccer with Los Angeles Galaxy at the age of 34.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho had been speaking pre-match about how close he was to bringing Gerrard, who has never won a league title, to Stamford Bridge during his first spell in charge, but the former England captain chose to stay at Anfield.

It’s a decision that the Daily Star's Cross thinks was the wrong call as he believes Gerrard would have won multiple Premier League titles if he joined the west Londoners.

“I’m a big fan of Gerrard but despite all his success, he’s underachieved at club level,” Cross told the Sunday Supplement.

“For a player of that ability to have never won a league title, it’s such a shame. He chose to stay with Liverpool, being a scouser, and remained very loyal to Liverpool as it’s hard to leave your hometown club. He’s been a part of the fabric of that club for so long but if he went to Chelsea when he had the chance, he would have won four or five league medals.

“You look at people like Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes and they have won 20-odd titles between them and Gerrard hasn’t won one. It’s just such a shame.”

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail’s chief sports writer Oliver Holt thinks Gerrard’s legacy is strong and he will be remembered for his exploits in the Champions League final of 2005, where he played a key role in Liverpool's famous win over AC Milan.

“I’m always wary of the idea that he should have moved on,” Holt said.

“I think it’s easy for us to say. If you look at it purely as a neutral and dispassionately then he probably would have going to somewhere like Real Madrid or Chelsea. But he is a Liverpool player, they are his team. I think if he hadn’t won the Champions League then maybe he would have had regrets.

"He won the most dramatic finals there has ever been. He was the man that inspired that comeback – it was his final. That’s his legacy.”
