Gers drop first points of the season at Pittodrie

Aberdeen fought back from a goal down to hold Rangers to a 1-1 draw at Pittodrie. David Weir's header put Walter Smith's side in front, but Derek Young's fierce half-volley on the stroke of half-time levelled matters as Gers dropped their first points of the season. Rangers started the match in confident fashion and twice came close to opening the scoring inside the opening ten minutes with Nacho Novo and Pedro Mendes both sending shots wide of Jamie Langfield's goal. Just when it looked like The Dons had weathered the storm, Gers forged ahead. After a soft free-kick was awarded for Andrew Considine's challenge, Kris Boyd floated in the ball for Weir to nod home. Rangers were seconds from taking their lead into half-time before the home side levelled matters with virtually their first meaningful attack of the half.

Equaliser

Alan McGregor could only parry Lee Miller's close-range header and Young pounced on the loose ball and smashed his left-footed effort into the roof of the net. Novo threatened Aberdeen's backline eight minutes after the re-start, but after doing well to create himself a sight of goal he was quickly closed down by the industrious Considine. The Dons survived a scare when Langfield received a back-pass without knowing he was being quickly closed down by Boyd and thankfully for the home side the ball bounced away from the danger zone. Substitute DaMarcus Beasley did have the ball in the net deep into injury-time, but Boyd was ruled to have been offside in the build-up, cutting short his goal celebrations.
