Bastian Schweinsteiger's late winner saw Bayern Munich open the season with a 2-1 win over Wolfsburg.

Schweinsteiger strike sees German champs make winning start

Bastian Schweinsteiger's injury-time winner saw Bayern Munich beat Wolfsburg 2-1 on Friday night in the opening match of the new Bundesliga season. Schweinsteiger struck at the death to ensure the German champions made a winning start to their title defence while condemning ex-England manager Steve McClaren to defeat in his first league game as Wolfsburg coach. Bayern were without winger Arjen Robben and striker Ivica Olic through injury but made a fine start as Thomas Muller, top scorer and Best Young Player at this summer's World Cup, volleyed home in the ninth minute from Toni Kroos' return pass. The visitors improved after the break as Croatia striker Mario Mandzukic hit a Bayern post before Edin Dzeko headed home a deserved equaliser from Zvjezdan Misimovic's 55th minute corner. Dzeko and half-time substitute Misimovic both had chances to put the Wolves into a winning position at the Allianz Arena. But with time almost up, Schweinsteiger was left unmarked at the far post to stab Franck Ribery's cross past goalkeeper Diego Benaglio to clinch victory.
