Hazard earns point for visitors with second-half equaliser

Cheick Diabate went from hero to villain after scoring a first-half penalty and missing a second-half one in Bordeaux's 1-1 draw with Lille on Tuesday. The Malian kept his cool to put Bordeaux 1-0 up from the spot early on before the Ligue 1 champions clawed their way back to level through key man Eden Hazard. Diabate should have won it for his side 10 minutes from time, however, only to send his second spot-kick of the night into the post. Diabate put the hosts ahead in just the seventh minute after he had been fouled by Florent Balmont in a clumsy incident. The striker was quickly on his feet to grab the ball before squeezing the spot-kick past Mickael Landreau. Bordeaux had another chance 23 minutes in when they broke brilliantly from a Lille corner. Nicolas Maurice-Belay made inroads and played in Benoit Tremoulinas on the left, the full-back cutting inside and sending a shot just wide. Lille showed signs of life on the half-hour mark when Laurent Bonnart had a shot blocked but three minutes later Maurice-Belay was attacking again, sending an effort whistling wide of the top left corner.

Flourish

Lille ended the half with a flourish as Joe Cole's corner found David Rozehnal and when his header was cleared, Moussa Sow smashed the rebound only to be denied by the impressive Kevin Olimpa. Hazard came close for Lille with a free-kick which went just over early in the second half and after 57 minutes they were level. Hazard teamed up with Cole and took on two defenders before sending a low, right-footed drive which Olimpa had little chance of stopping. Jaroslav Plasil and Tremoulinas both had shots denied well by Landreau and Bordeaux continued to create opportunities. The best of those was undoubtedly the late penalty. Ten minutes from time Landreau brought down substitute Fahid Ben Khalfallah - only receiving a yellow card for his trouble - but Diabate sent his kick crashing against the left post to earn Landreau a huge reprieve.
