Adam Lallana scored a wonderful goal as Liverpool kicked off their Europa League campaign with a 1-1 draw in Bordeaux.

The England international, one of eight changes made to the side that were beaten 3-1 by Manchester United, netted on 65 minutes after an audacious nutmeg.

But Liverpool couldn't hold on as Bordeaux substitute Jussie drew his side level with nine minutes remaining.

Rodgers made a wave of changes with a huge focus on youth.

Joe Gomez, Jordan Rossiter, Jordon Ibe and Divock Origi were joined on the pitch by young substitutes Pedro Chirivella and Cameron Brannigan by the end of the game as they all gained valuable European experience.

But it was asking a lot for a team of such inexperience to produce a dominating performance and great responsibility lay on the shoulders of Philippe Coutinho and the fit-again Lallana.

Coutinho was Liverpool's chief creator throughout and smashed a fine effort against the post late in the first-half but it was Bordeaux, mid-table in Ligue 1, who looked the more threatening.

Diego Rolan twice shot over when in good positions and Henri Saivet lifted a free-kick straight at Simon Mignolet.

Liverpool had a greater degree of control in the second half as Rossiter and Chirivella, long-time youth team colleagues, started to get into the game.

They laid the platforms for Coutinho to find Lallana on 65 minutes. The England man nutmegged Pablo and teed up a first-time finish inside the far post.

Substitute Danny Ings almost made it 2-0 with a carbon copy effort only to be denied by the outstretched hand of goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso.

But the youthful Liverpool legs started to tire in the closing stages and Jussie took full advantage of some unconvincing defending late on to level the game.
