Jordan Cranston inspired Morecambe to a 2-1 win at Cambridge, who end the season winless in seven home games.
The visitors were ahead in the ninth minute when Cranston's corner was headed on to Aaron Collins, who scored on the turn from virtually the goal-line.
Another Cranston corner found its way to Steven Old, who fired over from close range at the back post, and in the 27th minute Cranston sent a wind-assisted free-kick from just outside the centre circle narrowly wide.
Cambridge looked to have been handed a route back into the game three minutes before half-time when Old brought down Jevani Brown, only for goalkeeper Mark Halstead to save Brown's penalty down low to his left.
Cranston sealed victory on the break three minutes from time when he ran through on goal from inside his own half to slot past Dimitar Mitov.
There was time for Cambridge youngster Tom Knowles to score his first professional goal in stoppage time, sending a superb free-kick into the bottom corner.
