Bordeaux booked their place in the knockout stages of the Europa League with a 2-1 win over Club Brugge in Belgium.

Jussie at the double for Bordeaux

Brazilian striker Jussie scored twice in the first half to send Bordeaux through to the knockout stages of the Europa League after a 2-1 win over Club Brugge in Belgium. The French side will now effectively play off with fellow qualifiers Newcastle for top spot in Group D when they meet in Bordeaux next month while Brugge, for whom Maxime Lestienne replied, are eliminated. The Belgians needed a win to stand any chance of progression but could not have asked for a worse start as they fell behind to Jussie's low shot from six yards with just three minutes on the clock. The home side responded with a shot by Lior Rafaelov which was blocked in the box by Bordeaux defender Benoit Tremoulinas in the 10th minute. Gregory Sertic shot wide from long range for Bordeaux, and the visitors came even closer on the half-hour when Jaroslav Plasil's attempted lob was caught by Brugge keeper Vladan Kujovic. Kujovic also saved from a header by Nicolas Maurice-Belay as Bordeaux pressed for a second, and it arrived five minute sfrom the break when Jussie slid the ball home from 18 yards. Desperate to make some inroads before the break, Vadis Odjija Ofoe shot over the bar from 20 yards for Brugge, and they started the second period with a little more urgency. A Lestienne free-kick into the box was punched away by Bordeaux keeper Cedric Carasso, and another set-piece by the busy midfielder was booted away by Cheick Diabate. Kujovic in the Brugge goal saved a shot from Filho Mariano in the 65th minute, then Gregory Sertic shot wide from 20 yards for the visitors. Fahid Ben Khalfallah should have extended Bordeaux's lead when he shot over the bar from six yards in the 82nd minute, and the miss might have cost the French side as Lestienne reduced the deficit two minutes later from 18 yards. But it was the French side who finished well with Diabate and Khalfallah in particular having chances before Brugge's last chance came and went in injury time when Lestienne shot wide from 20 yards.
