Doncaster host Charlton in the first leg of their League One play-off semi-final on Sunday evening, with the underdog label firmly around their necks.
The only side in the play-offs without Premier League experience, Rovers find themselves among the likes of Portsmouth and Sunderland, having held their nerve on the final day of the season to nab the final top-six berth, at the expense of Peterborough.
Their visitors, guided by former player Lee Bowyer, have managed to exceed expectations this term, capitalising on the downturn in form of both Pompey and the Black Cats and earning what they might see as the favourable tie, having finished third.
Three times these two clubs have already met this season, but there has been little to separate them with each boasting a win prior to a 1-1 draw at the Keepmoat Stadium back in early March. On paper, perhaps, this appears the lesser of the two ties, yet the reality could be something quite contrasting.
Team news
Grant McCann has a fully fit squad to choose from as his Doncaster side face Charlton in the first leg of their Sky Bet League One play-off. Alfie Beestin and Ben Whiteman could come into the squad after recently recovering from injury.
McCann's side did not secure their play-off spot until the final day of the regular season with a 2-0 home win over Coventry and he will look to maintain the momentum against Charlton. Rovers will be able to rely on veteran James Coppinger, 38, beyond the play-offs after the winger signed a new contract this week.
Charlton manager Lee Bowyer is hopeful midfielder Jonny Williams will be able to face Doncaster after passing a fitness test on Thursday. However, forward Igor Vetokele misses out through injury.
Bowyer is unsure when Vetokele will be fit, so he could also miss the return fixture at The Valley. However, apart from Vetokele, Bowyer has a full squad to choose from.
The managers
Charlton boss Lee Bowyer: "I'm just concentrating on these play-off games - that's most important. The contract, that will get done. I need to make sure we are right for the next three games, if we get through our semi-final.
"I'm not worried about the contract, everyone seems to be more worried than me about it! I'm sure we'll get there.
"Out of our starting 11 now, how many of them played last year in the play-offs? Joe (Aribo), Pat (Bauer) and Anfernee (Dijksteel). That's it. It is not like we have got the same side. And the other thing is you just can't control the emotions of the day.
"That's the most important thing to me. To make it as normal a game as possible, because emotions can take over and then it can go wrong for players and how they handle it. We have got a young side but I'm sure we have played enough big games this season already for them to see how to handle these big matches."
Doncaster boss Grant McCann: "We've been underdogs throughout the season, this group were written off from day one but they've proved everyone wrong. They proved them wrong here by getting in the play-offs, now we want to prove them wrong by getting promotion.
"We have a tough couple of games coming up now against Charlton, we had a tough game back at their place in the league, but they'll know that they were lucky to come away with a point at the Keepmoat Stadium. They're a good footballing side but we have to make sure we deliver again.
"The previous games against Charlton mean nothing, we can look back at them and they were far better than us in the first game but in the cup game we deserved the win. The game here was even, but all three of those games mean absolutely nothing - just like the 46 games that got us here.
"Neither side will want to sit back - like every game this season we're going out to win it whether we're home or away and my players know no different so it's going to be a good game. We've got a strong group mentality. We know what we're up against; a strong team and a very good manager with some very good players and a team that can hurt us if we're not right."
Opta stats
Doncaster are appearing in the play-offs for a second time in the Football League, earning promotion in their first, which was also in League One in 2007-08.
Charlton have reached the League One promotion play-offs for a second consecutive campaign; they were eliminated by Shrewsbury in the 2017-18 semi-finals.
The sixth-placed side has earned promotion from League One in two of the last three seasons (Barnsley in 2016, Millwall in 2017); only two of the last 18 third-tier play-off winners had finished sixth before this.
Whilst third-placed clubs have won promotion from the third-tier play-offs more than any other position (11 times), just one of the last eight League One play-off winners have been the side that finished third - Preston in 2014-15.
Doncaster are unbeaten in their last three home meetings with Charlton in all competitions (W1 D2), last losing to them on home soil in the Championship in 2008-09 (0-1).
Since the start of last season, Charlton have only lost once in five clashes with Doncaster in all competitions, winning two and drawing two, including a 1-1 stalemate in their last visit to the Keepmoat in March.
Doncaster have only lost once in their last 15 games in league competition (including play-offs) at the Keepmoat Stadium (W10 D4), a 1-2 loss to Accrington in April.
Only Luton Town's James Collins (25) scored more goals in League One this season than Doncaster's John Marquis and Charlton's Lyle Taylor (both 21).

Prutton's prediction
It's safe to say Doncaster are the major underdogs in the League One play-offs. They have been in and around the top six for a lot of the campaign, but in terms of points accrued you can see they are a little way off the others.
I worried for Charlton after they lost Karlan Grant in January, but Lyle Taylor has stepped up by himself in attack and they are undoubtedly the form team heading into the play-offs. Lee Bowyer has the experience of losing to Shrewsbury last season and they will fancy their chances this time.
David Prutton predicts: 1-1 (9/2 with Sky Bet)
