Forest Green Rovers won 1-0 at Dover Athletic on Wednesday night in their National League play-off semi-final first leg.
Brett Williams curled home the winner after 35 minutes for the away side, who finished nine points above Dover in the final table.
Stefan Payne struck just wide of the post late on as Forest Green clung on to the lead, and the pair will meet again on Saturday.
The game came just a days after manager Ady Pannock was sacked by Forest Green, who are looking to reach the Football League for the first time in their history.
Grimsby host Braintree in the other semi-final on Thursday, with the sides looking to join Cheltenham in League Two next season.
