Nigeria shocked France 1-0 in St Etienne in the first ever meeting between the sides. Joseph Akpala scored the only goal of the game in the first half to give Nigeria a memorable victory. Nigeria came close to opening the scoring early on when Sebastien Squillaci cleared Ikechukwu Uche's effort off the line. The Africans grabbed the only goal of the game on 32 minutes when Akpala reacted quickest to score after Uche's shot had come back off the post. France improved in the second half but they could not find a way past a stubborn Nigeria defence Debutant Loic Remy came closest to scoring when he hit the post two minutes from time.
