Gillingham 3-1 Plymouth: Hosts move closer to League One safety
Friday 19 April 2019 22:28, UK
Gillingham moved closer to securing their League One status after scoring twice in two minutes en route to beating out-of-form Plymouth Argyle 3-1 at Priestfield.
Without a win in their previous five games, Argyle took the lead on 25 minutes when Freddie Ladapo twisted his way through the Gills defence and blazed past Tomas Holy.
However, the hosts levelled shortly after the break when substitute Elliott List's cross was chested in by Regan Charles-Cook for his third of the season.
Midfielder Mark Byrne then headed home unmarked from Luke O'Neill's corner to complete his side's quick-fire turnaround on 58 minutes.
Brandon Hanlan sealed victory for the Gills in stoppage time after latching onto a loose ball in midfield and firing past Kyle Letheren.
Victory moves Steve Lovell's side onto 51 points, six clear of the relegation zone, while Plymouth are teetering, four points further back.
In a game of few chances, the outcome could have been different had Ladapo not dragged a low shot wide at the end of an Argyle break three minutes into the second half.
Antoni Sarcevic should have also scored for the visitors but missed the target from 12 yards after meeting Ruben Lameiras' cross late on.
