Scunthorpe blow chance for seventh successive win

Leyton Orient fought back from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw with 10-man Scunthorpe. The Iron were looking for a seventh consecutive league win and were on course thanks to goals from Izzy Iriekpen and Paul Hayes. But the game turned on the 57th-minute dismissal of Joe Murphy for a foul on JJ Melligan, and Adam Boyd netted the rebound after the resulting penalty was saved, with Stephen Purches netting the leveller. Scunthorpe went ahead when home defender Alton Thelwell mis-kicked his attempted clearance of Grant McCann's corner and Iriekpen, up for the set piece, swept in his second goal of the season. When Orient midfielder Jason Demetriou earned a yellow card for a rash tackle on the stroke of half-time, McCann was again the deliverer from a set piece for Paul Hayes to head home. But Murphy then saw red and although his replacement Joshua Lillis parried Boyd's first effort from the spot, the Orient striker followed up to reduce arrears. And skipper Purches earned the Os a point after 68 minutes when he found himself totally unmarked and beat Lillis in a one-on-one.
