Hamilton player/manager Martin Canning has signed a new one-year playing contract with the Scottish Premiership side.

The 34-year-old played in just three games this season, twice appearing as a substitute, with his last start coming in October's 4-2 defeat at home to St Johnstone.

For the second successive season Canning led Hamilton to safety, with the New Douglas Park club finishing 10th in the Scottish top flight, seven points clear of Kilmarnock in the play-off place.

Canning originally took over as caretaker player/manager in January 2015 following the departure of Alex Neil to Norwich but was offered the job permanently later that month.

Despite largely sticking to the dugout since his Accies appointment, he admitted earlier this month he was not ready to hang up his boots.

"I'm ticking along in terms of the manager contract and I'll probably sign on for another year as a player," he said. "I will certainly be available to play and maybe try and help the kids by playing some U20s games.

"I'm keen to play. I'll do pre-season. People tell me you're ready to retire when pre-season makes you feel sick but I'm not there yet. I'm looking forward to get going again. If I can play a part I'll be there to do it."
