Chris Coleman can take Wales to next level, says David Edwards

Midfielder David Edwards believes Chris Coleman can take Wales to the next level and hopes the Welsh FA can see his importance.

Coleman's contract is due to end this month and his future is uncertain after a 1-1 friendly draw with World Cup-bound Panama on Tuesday night.

Edwards said: "I think he (Coleman) wants to stay, but obviously stuff needs sorting above us."

"Hopefully the FAW can see his importance and make it happen, because he's a huge part of what's happening in Welsh football.

Coleman is Wales' most successful manager after taking them to the semi-finals of Euro 2016.

"He genuinely believes that this team can go on to another level and with him at the helm, we definitely can."

"I know every single player wants to keep the gaffer," the Reading midfielder said.

"We really appreciate what he's done for this country, especially after taking over in such difficult circumstances and having such a tough first 18 months.

Wales failed to qualify for the World Cup play-offs after losing 1-0 to Republic of Ireland.

"Of course, we're bitterly disappointed we're not going to the World Cup.

"But I still think there's plenty more to come with him at the helm.

"The team spirit we've got is like being at a club and our best chance of success is if we can keep the gaffer."

Some of the senior Welsh players, including Gareth Bale, have already spoken to Coleman about staying in the job and the Welsh fans showed their appreciation for the 47-year-old in the opening minutes of Tuesday's game.

Coleman said: "It's a funny one because I don't know what's going to happen. I hope that's not going to be the last game."
