Newcastle are in talks to sign Nice forward Alassane Plea, according to Sky sources.

Plea, who scored 21 goals last season for the Ligue 1 club, returned to training on Tuesday after he missed their first day of pre-season on Monday. The 25-year-old said his absence was due to air strikes.

Sky Sports News understands Nice have already rejected a Newcastle bid worth up to £27m, while West Ham have offered the same fee for the player.

Fulham and Tottenham are also believed to be interested in the former France U21 international.

Nice boss Patrick Vieira, who took charge at the Allianz Riviera this summer, had spoken of his surprise at the absence of two of the club's leading players from their first training season.

"We were supposed to have all the players [available]. Unfortunately, those weren't there," Vieira said. "We are trying to get to the bottom of it.

"We were expecting him [Plea] today but he wasn't here and it wasn't foreseen. My wish is to keep the players who want to be part of the project."
