Late equaliser crushes Saints

Everton midfielder Tom Davies' 96th-minute equaliser was a sucker punch in Southampton's hopes of Premier League survival.

Davies' deflected effort earned the Toffees a point - and came more than a minute after the four of added time signalled by referee Jon Moss had elapsed.

The goal did not excuse Everton from being booed off by their fans at full-time, however, having also jeered the team off the pitch at the interval.

Southampton, meanwhile, were left to sink to the floor in anguish that their two-point gap to the bottom three had been extinguished, and they lead 18th-placed Swansea only on goal difference following the draw at Goodison Park.

The Saints had led through Nathan Redmond's 56th-minute opener - but were pegged back when Maya Yoshida was sent off for a second booking five minutes from time.
