Premier League weekend grades: Alan Smith gives his verdict
Monday 5 October 2015 22:35, UK
Did YOUR Premier League team live up to expectations this weekend?
We've asked Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith to give each side a grade based solely on their 90-minute performance over the weekend.
So how did your team fare? Did they get an A+ or an F, or somewhere in between? Read on to see how your team has been ranked...
Everton B
They did ever so well to come back into the game with the Lukaku goal, but the match against Liverpool petered out in the second half, and they weren't overly bothered about chasing the winner. It was a good point for them in the end.
Liverpool B
I don't think a draw at Goodison is ever a bad result. They got a win against Aston Villa the weekend before, so to follow that up with a draw is not a disaster, despite the manager getting sacked afterwards!
Arsenal A+
As good as they've played in a long, long while, and more of the same please. The pace and technique in the first half was just too much for Manchester United.
Man Utd D
They didn't get started at Arsenal and couldn't cope with the movement. I think Louis van Gaal messed up by not picking Morgan Schneiderlin in midfield, and really they just didn't get going and the game was lost within the first 20 minutes. They never looked like getting back in it.
Swansea B-
They went ahead twice against Tottenham, and despite not having had the best of months, when you go ahead twice you'll be hoping to win the match. They couldn't, but against a dangerous Spurs side, it's not a terrible result for them.
Tottenham B
The manager thought they lacked a killer touch in their inability to get the win, but they showed character coming back twice. Away from home against Swansea, it's decent.
Crystal Palace A
There was only one team in this match. West Brom couldn't live with them, and Wilfried Zaha and Yannick Bolasie were unstoppable on the day. They are flying under Alan Pardew and there's still that element of unknown about them.
West Brom D
They were poor. A bit like United, they never got going and never got the forwards involved. Defensively they are normally better, so it's just a really bad result for them.
Aston Villa E
It's a shocker. At home they needed some kind of result, even if it was a point, so it's very disappointing. Tim Sherwood changed the shape in search of the right formula, and he failed to find it.
Stoke B+
It's a good win for them after a difficult start to the season. Mark Hughes has them coming into their own game now, and there was, by the looks of it, just one team in it and they could have had more.
Bournemouth B-
They've gone ahead through Glenn Murray, who has replaced the injured Callum Wilson. Without Wilson, it is going to be difficult. But it was a real cock-up from Artur Boruc to concede the equaliser to Ighalo, and Eddie Howe won't be happy.
Watford B
Away from home against a fellow promoted side, it's a good point. Any point away from home in the Premier League is good, especially after their progress was halted last weekend against Crystal Palace.
Man City A
It wasn't on Arsenal's level because they could have easily gone more than one goal down in the first half, but the second half was brilliant.
Sergio Aguero was sensational in the second half, and on that form, who is going to stop them? He's the best striker in the Premier League.
Newcastle D
You've got to take into account the first half, but they capitulated in the second. There are things to be encouraged by, but in the same breath, the way they collapsed is worrying.
Norwich C
They didn't reach the levels that they have done previously at home under Alex Neil. They were out-fought and out-run by their visitors. Not a good day for Norwich, but they've looked good so far this season.
Leicester A
You've got to give them an A after bouncing back from a bit of a pumping against Arsenal. To return in that fashion, going 2-0 up at Carrow Road, against a Norwich side that were in good form, speaks volumes for the togetherness in that group. Jamie Vardy marches on, too.
Sunderland B-
The good news is they scored a couple of goals. The bad news is they got a man sent off and were made to pay for it. But at least they got a couple of goals. It's a start, but they need more under the new manager.
West Ham B
Coming from two goals behind, against 10 men or not, is a good reaction. Despite Sunderland's toils and troubles, Slaven Bilic will take that point.
Chelsea D
They just can't get it together, even though they went a goal ahead. That's the most worrying thing, that they couldn't kick on in the way they normally do. It's worrying times for the Premier League champions.
Southampton A
They played some fantastic football on the counter, Sadio Mane in particular with Graziano Pelle. For Ronald Koeman, it's definitely one of their best performances under him, some wonderful football was played in that second half to get the lead and then the cushion.
