Football agent Sky Andrew has a warning for the Premier League's top clubs over shortening the transfer window

The Premier League's top clubs risk ceding power to European rivals if the transfer window shuts early, says a leading football agent.

Top-flight clubs will discuss the proposed introduction of a new summer transfer window that closes before the opening game of next season.

Sky Sports News has been told by sources that the "majority" of top-flight clubs currently favour an earlier closure, and the issue could be voted on during their next shareholders' meeting in September.

What is needed to change the window?

At least 14 of the Premier League's 20 clubs must agree for a new rule to be introduced.

Sky Andrew, who previously represented Sol Campbell and Jermain Defoe, insists moving the transfer goalposts will have no impact on agents working all year round, but predicts a power struggle for the Premier League's biggest clubs.

"Agents are speaking to players and clubs throughout the season, it's not going to change how much work agents do, even if it is shortened," Andrew told Sky Sports News.

"But here's where bigger clubs better look out. If the window closes earlier, ahead of Europe, then the big clubs in Europe can come and take players from our big clubs.

"It's not going to be easy, but the big powers - Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich - after the window is shut they can come and start bidding big money for our players.

"How can our big clubs let their big names go? It's going to be a bit of a power struggle, but it is going to put our big clubs at a bit of a disadvantage if clubs come in with big-money offers.

"Fans are not going to want to see their squad depleted and you can't go again until January."
