Emre Can may not play again this season after scans confirmed the Liverpool midfielder suffered ruptured ankle ligaments during Thursday’s Europa League victory over Borussia Dortmund.
The 22-year-old left the ground with his right foot in a protective boot after limping off ten minutes from time having fallen awkwardly in a goalmouth scramble.
He underwent a scan on Friday and will now struggle to make Germany's squad for the Euro 2016 finals.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said on Saturday: "At this moment it is not the best news to be honest. I don't want to give a timescale but we will try everything to get him back as soon as possible.
"There is hope for a few things. We should not say 'season is finished' but if he's not available then we have to deal with it.
"There is a chance, how big time will show. It will take time, that is clear, but we have to find other situations. It is not about moaning about the situation.
"It is the last four or five weeks of the season so we should not say 'OK the season is finished' because there is hope.
"Emre was in really good shape. You could see he felt secure, confident and he used his skills like he should. Not always running with the ball like he did in the past."
The news on Can is the second injury blow for the Reds who have already lost Jordan Henderson with damaged knee ligaments, suffered in the first leg of their quarter-final tie against Dortmund.
On Friday, Liverpool were drawn to face Spanish club Villarreal in the semi-finals of the Europa League.
