The result stretched City's unbeaten run to nine matches and ended Portsmouth's club-record nine-match winning run in the process.

Godden slotted home after Callum O'Hare lobbed the ball over the defence to break the deadlock.

City created the better chances in a quiet first half and went close with Liam Walsh early on.

The Pompey keeper then kept out a long range effort from O'Hare in the 30th minute, before Jamie Allen lifted the ball narrowly over two minutes before the break.

Pompey's sole first-half opportunity fell to Ben Close, who blazed over.

In a fast start to the second period, Amadou Bakayoko's close-range header went narrowly wide and Cameron McGeehan's shot was blocked at the other end.
