Barnsley P-P Burton: League One game called off after volunteer suffered cardiac arrest

Barnsley volunteer Stephen Croft in serious condition after being airlifted to hospital

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance lands on the pitch prior to the Sky Bet League One match between Barnsley and Burton Albion at Oakwell due to a medical emergency

Barnsley's Sky Bet League One fixture against Burton Albion was postponed on Saturday after club volunteer Stephen Croft suffered a cardiac arrest shortly before kick-off.

An air ambulance landed on the pitch at Oakwell. The match was initially delayed but was eventually called off around 30 minutes later.

Croft was airlifted to Sheffield Northern General, where he remains as he recovers from the cardiac arrest.

A Barnsley statement read: "A popular member of the match day staff at the club, Stephen is exceptionally well thought of and today's news has devastated the staff, as well as the community of Barnsley.

"We would like to place on record our sincerest thanks to everyone connected to Burton Albion for their help and swift action in assisting Stephen during the incident."

Burton wrote on the club's official Twitter feed: "It goes without saying, but all our thoughts are with those affected."

Croft's family have also issued a statement, saying: "He (Stephen) is now stable but in a poorly condition in hospital, at Sheffield Northern General.

"The family would like to thank both sets of fans for their dignity and understanding. This sort of incident brings out the best in people and that can be seen today in the stands and on the pitch at Oakwell. They are a credit to both teams.

"The family are humbled by the messages of support already received. It goes without saying we can all be proud of our ambulance services including the air ambulance, who we all couldn't thank enough."

There is no news yet on when the League One match will be replayed.
