Oldham have announced that head coach Pete Wild has left the Sky Bet League Two side due to personal reasons.

The 34-year-old took over after former England and Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes left the club after just 31 days in charge at Boundary Park.

Sky Sports News understands that Wild spoke to Oldham owner Abdallah Lemsagam on Tuesday morning, and asked to take an extended period of leave due to personal reasons.

The club accepted his request and have told Wild that the door is always open for him to return.

The Latics, who are looking for their fourth manager in a year, announced the news with a statement that said: "Oldham Athletic Football Club can announce that Pete Wild has decided to leave the club due to personal reasons.

"The club would like to place on record a special thanks to Pete for his time and efforts recently as head coach, as well as his first spell in caretaker charge earlier in the 2018/19 season which included the memorable FA Cup victory at Fulham, in addition to his excellent work with the academy set-up over the years."

Lemsagam added: "Pete worked extremely hard for this club, which I am grateful for, but came to me today saying he wants to spend some time away from football.

"He's a great guy, I'm sad to see him go and would have liked him to stay with the club but I respect his decision and wish him well for the future."

Wild was previously head of the club's academy and initially took caretaker charge earlier in the season when Frankie Bunn was sacked.

He oversaw an FA Cup third-round victory over Premier League Fulham during that spell, before standing aside when Scholes was appointed manager.

Oldham also announced that captain Peter Clarke, and former Everton midfielder Jose Baxter have both left the club.
