Midfielder Robbie Weir has made a permanent move to Chesterfield ahead of their first League Two game against Grimsby.

Chesterfield's campaign in League Two will be strengthened by the addition of the Northern Irish player, who left Leyton Orient following their relegation to the National League last season.

The 28-year-old suffered anterior cruciate ligament damage and missed the second half of last season.

He has now returned to full fitness, proving himself during a spell on trial with the Spireites, and has spoken of his excitement at getting back to playing regularly, for a team he has previously played against.

The midfielder, who has spent time in League One and Two, said: "After a long-term injury, it's fantastic that the gaffer has given me the opportunity to get back into football.

"I've worked my socks off to get back to where I am now and this is only the start, the hard work starts now and I just want to get back to enjoying football."

Chesterfield have made numerous summer signings and boss Gary Caldwell is certainly pleased with Weir.

"I jumped at the chance to look at Robbie on trial," he said.

"He was always someone who impressed me with his quality.
