Gareth Southgate is the early 6/4 favourite with Sky Bet to replace Roy Hodgson as England manager.
Success at Euro 2016 was deemed imperative for Hodgson to remain in his position with FA chairman Greg Dyke reiterating that stance in the build-up to England's last-16 match with Iceland.
But a 2-1 defeat to the lowest-ranked side left in the tournament saw Hodgson take his future into his own hands, the 68-year-old confirming at his post-match press conference he would step down.
The focus will now turn to Hodgson's successor - and Sky Bet believe that England U21 manager Southgate is in pole position to take over the reins.
Southgate led his Young Lions to victory in the Toulon Tournament - their first since 1994 - with victory against hosts France last month.
Sky Bet spokesman Sandro Di Michele said: "There is a lack of obvious candidates to replace Roy Hodgson but Gareth Southgate has been working within the England set-up for some time now and has enjoyed success with the U21s.
"He looks perfectly placed to step up to manage the men's team and bring through a host of talented youngsters that he has been helping to develop.
"Southgate is our favourite, while Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew is on offer at 8/1."
Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe is considered as one of the brightest young English managerial talents in the game and he is 10/1 with Sky Bet, the same price as Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.
Harry Redknapp is a 16/1 chance to be given the top job while Sam Allardyce can be backed at 18/1.
Among the more unlikely candidates quoted are former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard - now at LA Galaxy - who are both 100/1.
