Will Sheff Utd send Sheff Wed down on Sunday?

  • Sheffield United vs Sheffield Wednesday, live on Sky Sports Football from 11.30am on Sunday; kick-off 12pm

A bad season could easily get worse for Sheffield Wednesday. There is every chance that Sheffield United could relegate them on Sunday, if it has not already happened by then.

Here are the permutations for Sunday (if it gets that far)...

  • Sheffield Wednesday will be relegated if they fail to win on Sunday.

But they could also go down on Saturday...

  • Should Blackburn avoid defeat at Preston on Friday night, then Sheffield Wednesday will be relegated if West Brom beat Coventry on Saturday lunchtime.
  • Even if Blackburn lose, a West Brom win and Leicester avoiding defeat against Stoke on Saturday - also at lunchtime - would also see Sheffield Wednesday relegated. This is because Blackburn host Leicester on the final day, meaning Sheffield Wednesday could not reach 21st regardless.

Got all that? Good. Chances are, Wednesday will be relegated this weekend. It is just a case of when. They would probably prefer it happened before they got to Bramall Lane.

The Sky Sports Essential EFL podcast looks ahead to the Championship clash

David Prutton on the Sky Sports Essential EFL podcast:

"The rivalry adds another layer. This is not a compassionate rivalry; it is fierce. If something significant happens at Bramall Lane, the celebrations will be emphatic.

Also See:

"Sheffield Wednesday's problems have been discussed at length. There has been gross mismanagement from the top. The squad is a mixture of young players and those available to bring in, which makes the Championship an uphill battle. Their best player left for a club pushing for the play-offs and promotion. It is a toxic combination.

"The one constant is the supporters, who remain loyal through everything. Pride will be at stake and the manager will demand it does not happen here, but everything points towards Sheffield United taking advantage."

A Lancashire hotpot to get the weekend started

  • Blackburn vs Preston, live on Sky Sports Football from 7.30pm on Friday night; kick-off 8pm

There is more than just pride to play for at Ewood Park on Friday night. Blackburn Rovers are vying to avoid the drop, with just three points between themselves and the relegation zone heading into Friday night's game. But they started well under new boss Michael O'Neill, as they won 3-1 at QPR last Saturday.

The visitors are Preston North End. A point takes them into sixth spot ahead of the rest of the weekend. Victory would put them in a very strong position to make sure they are still there by Saturday evening.

David Prutton on the Sky Sports Essential EFL podcast:

"Michael O'Neill has to hit the ground running and Blackburn started well with that win as he watched on at QPR. I listened to his interview and he was pragmatic about the situation. He is preparing for Northern Ireland's play-off games, but saving Blackburn would keep him motivated in the meantime.

"Preston have the upper hand given their position. Having covered this derby at both grounds, there is no love lost. It is always a cracking fixture. It is a strong way to start the weekend."

West Brom are still winless under Eric Ramsay, but two goalless draws in their last two games are a platform to build on as they bid to escape from the drop

Coventry will be bouncing after their win over Middlesbrough on Monday night that took them back to the top of the Championship. But their form on the road badly needs to improve if they are to stay there. They have failed to win in seven away from the CBS Arena. The Hawthorns would be a good place to start.

David Prutton on the Sky Sports Essential EFL podcast:

"Coventry were brilliant against Middlesbrough. They hit the post inside 99 seconds and maintained that pressure. They made life very difficult for Boro. They allowed possession without being troubled and showed real composure for a team at the top of the league. They created chances and took them clinically. It was a strong response.

"West Brom, who I saw at Birmingham, were defensively solid. It was always going to be a rearguard action at St Andrew's. There are still big questions around Eric Ramsay's appointment, but there have been incremental improvements. Coventry look too strong for them here."
