Former Porto coach Paulo Fonseca has been appointed as the new head coach of Shakhtar Donetsk.

Fonseca replaces longtime Shakhtar boss Mircea Lucescu, who won the UEFA Cup and eight domestic titles during 12 years with the club before moving to Zenit St Petersburg earlier this month.

The 43-year-old Fonseca said in a statement he would follow in Lucescu's footsteps and play "beautiful, high-quality football".

Fonseca coached Porto in the 2013-14 season. He finished fourth with Braga in the Portuguese league this season and beat Porto to win the Portuguese cup earlier this month.
