Dundee have signed former Celtic central defender Darren O'Dea for the remainder of the season.

The 28-year-old Republic of Ireland international was a free agent after returning to Scotland following a spell in the Indian Super League with Mumbai City.

O'Dea started his career with Celtic and made his debut as a 19-year-old in 2006 but he struggled to hold down a regular starting place with the Hoops.

He had loan spells with Reading, Ipswich and Leeds before leaving Parkhead in 2012 for MLS side Toronto.

After a season in Canada he joined Ukrainian side FC Metalurh Donetsk before moving back to England on a short-term deal with Blackpool prior to his stint in India.

Dundee have been left short of options at the back with James McPake requiring a knee operation after being stretchered off during the 2-1 derby win over Dundee United at the weekend.

Fellow central defender Julen Etxabeguren is also on the sidelines with an eye injury.
