Norway 1-0 Republic of Ireland Women: Irish hopes dashed by World Cup qualifying defeat
Wednesday 13 June 2018 09:15, UK
Republic of Ireland Women saw their hopes of reaching next year's World Cup end after a 1-0 defeat to Norway in Stavanger.
Following a 2-0 loss in Tallaght against Norway on Friday, Colin Bell's side needed a positive result in the return fixture to keep themselves in contention from Group Three.
Defender Harriet Scott was missing through a minor knee injury, while Diane Caldwell was suspended and Niamh Fahey was rested as a precaution.
Aine O'Gorman won her 100th cap and led the team out at the Viking Stadion.
Norway took the lead after 24 minutes when Caroline Graham Hansen converted a penalty conceded by Claire O'Riordan for a foul on the Wolfsburg winger.
Ireland rallied as Leanne Kiernan's shot was blocked, before O'Riordan headed wide, but the visitors were unable to find a way back into the match.
Norway remain second in the group, five points clear of Ireland, who only have one match left.
