Peru record shock victory in South American qualifying

A late Hernan Rengifo goal earned Peru a 1-0 victory over Uruguay in the South American Zone of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup. A tight match looked set to end goalless, but Rengifo netted in the 86th minute of the game, while Diego Godin was sent off for Uruguay in the dying seconds. Sixth-placed Uruguay were anxious to move up the group, making victory on their trip to Peru all the more imperative. The Uruguayans had lost only once on their last six visits to Lima and, with the hosts bottom, their chances of enhancing that record looked good. But Peru frustrated their visitors and then grabbed the win when Rengifo struck after a corner with only four minutes remaining. The end of the match was marred by unsavoury scuffles between players and Godin was dismissed in the 90th minute for deliberate handball.
